I didn't come to this as a software developer. I came to it as a business owner with a problem.

I was running a service business and like most growing operations, it was held together with spreadsheets, paperwork and relying on people to remember things.

 

I wanted one system that ran it exactly the way I needed. Existing software was always a compromise; it never quite fit, and it didn't fit my franchise ambitions either. I needed something that ticked every box and did it white labelled so I could continue to promote my brand.

So I got a custom build quoted. The numbers were eye-watering... well over a hundred thousand dollars was the cheapest quote. Instead of paying it, I learned to build it myself - and that quickly became a new passion and in years later, a career.

That system changed everything. The whole operation ran from one place: jobs, schedules, billing, customer communications, franchisees and contractors each with their own view. It became so tightly systemised that it turned into one of the biggest reasons I was able to sell the company.
